Had David Fanning been a Patriot, he would have been one of the greatest heroes of the American Revolution. However, he fell on the wrong side of history and is considered to be perhaps the greatest villain North Carolina has ever known. One of the Captains he commissioned for his Loyalist militia was maternal 7th Great-Grandfather William Deaton. Really interesting to see the war from the Tory perspective.
