Should I be comforting him?
What if I slip up? What if I say something like, Don't worry, Jeff, life is meaningless; it's strange and inexplicable that we exist to begin with. We are all basically dead already in the grand scheme of things, and our feelings of sadness are pointless—they are just how our meat sacks react to the chemicals in our bodies.

"One day, you are going to die," Jeff's booming voice echoes through the church. "Everyone in this room will someday be dead."

I want you to know that I wish I did. I hope you're able to feel even an infinitesimal bit of happiness today despite all of this.

"Okay." I nod. Maybe that's true.
"How do I occupy myself?"
"I find I feel less anxious when I spend my time trying to make the people around me happier," he shares. "Maybe you should try that."

"I'm probably the person people regret dating," I said.

Wow. This does feel like the thought process of someone I know. 😅

That doesn't actually make this any less sad, it just means that there is so much potent sadness on earth that this becomes trivial. Everything becomes trivial. Nothing matters.

At some point, it feels like I’m inside the head of someone I’m fond of. 🥺

Of course I'm a fraud. The fact that I'm able to carry myself through life without being crushed beneath the psychological weight of being alive proves that I'm a con artist. Aren't we all con artists?

I don't really owe anyone anything. I am an animal, brought into existence without my consent, left scrounging to get by. I have my own problems. I have a full plate: I have to pay my bills; I have to pass as a Catholic; I have to clean my lint trap; I have to focus on breathing.
