I first read Frankenstein when I was a teenager — accustomed to modern storytelling — which resulted in lessened appreciation of the style of Victorian novels. Now that I’m older, I find myself adoring the atmospheric nature that proliferates Frankenstein and its Gothic kin.

I’m glad that I endeavored to reread this. I made it a goal to read more Gothic literature in 2026 and wanted to begin with my old favorites. You really notice more interesting details in old literature the more you reread them.
