i was looking through the evolution of the spoken chinese language through diff time periods, and the ancient chinese sounded very differently from the modern day mandarin which begs the question how the fuck transmigrators manage the language problem?? i guess in most novels that problem doesnt even come up bcs they just magically can. but it would be interesting as a plot twist to make it more realistic.

but also in salted fish the gong uses all sorts of modern language, well at least in the english translation. im not sure how different it is in the original, but im pretty sure they wouldn't say things like "what a flex" in ancient china...

i tried reading that novel but never could move past chap 1 so i doubt ill be picking it up any time soon anyway
nah the gong transmigrated, but the shou didn’t really pay much attention to it? at least he didn’t crack it at the point where i dnfed which is more than 40 chapters. i guess everyone in ancient china was fluent in internet speak…
This kind of thing bothers me in time travel as well. Or in a lot of historical movies where everyone just "magically" speak the same language.
If I remember correctly this issue was adressed at least a little in Beloved Pet Fish because Li Yu can't read all old texts and he also teaches Mu Tianchi new words such as 'boyfriend' :D and in How to survive as a villain, nobody has any idea what Xiao Yu'an is rambling all the time because he often quotes modern philosophers and politicans haha
@monique you remember correctly! I'm reading it rn and Li Yu has problems reading/ writing and sometimes people have no idea what he's saying too xD like he said 'I need a sec' and Wang Xi was like 'Who's Aseck'? (that line took me out haha)
Monique wrote: "If I remember correctly this issue was adressed at least a little in Beloved Pet Fish because Li Yu can't read all old texts and he also teaches Mu Tianchi new words such as 'boyfriend' :D and in H..."thats a bit different from what i was talking about thou. i mean the spoken language itself was different from the modern version. a modern person wouldnt be able to understand what an ancient person was saying and vice versa. the modern mandarin pronunciation is actually very recent and was only standardized in mid-20th century from what i understand.
i guess the implied assumption here is when someone transmigrates they get the memories of the person they transmigrated into hence why they speak the ancient version intuitively or smth but i think itd make for a great idea to have the mc not understand the spoken language at all and have them learn it consciously.

I think its like that with most languages though, like trying to read english or german from the middle ages is so confusing and I understand only about every 3rd word ;_;

for the ones i've read the mc's are just in a fake historical period where the language & writing is just magically similar to modern chinese lol

I was laughing so much here 😂😂😂
