Why is she faking a date. You’re grown ass adults running around each other in circles and for what?

I’m confused about his personality change? He was so rude for the first 60 pages of this book and then just 180s into Mr nice guy/huge flirt. Was he mean bc she was pretty and he didn’t know how to behave around her or what? Bc there was no reason to be rude at first.
