So far, the worldbuilding is fascinating! So different from other fantasies, a mix of several recognizable cultural pieces plus the magic of monsters.

Also, this is a great way to start a novel: the inciting incident is part of normal life, but it snowballs into the events that take the protagonist into changing forever. We're headed there now.
