Just finished the chapter on Rembrandt. On his last painting featuring Simeon and the young Jesus, “When I look at the old painter’s reimagining of the scene, to my eye he didn’t seem to want to show us the spectacle of the temple when Simeon held Jesus or what he can do with it as a painter. After a life filled with suffering and sorrow, he just seems to want to hold Jesus.”
