Also, I must write, that this never-ending chain of horrible events, caused very much by decisions made in spite of seeing bad things coming at the horizon, really irks me the wrong way.
Yes, I understand it's not easy to just pack and leave, but when you have such a big family and everything is CLEARLY going to hell, maybe you should have started doing something BEFORE you're in a literal hole in the ground?

This book is revelling in misery in a way I have not put myself through in ages. It's a bit of a slog, no matter how "based on true history" it may be. Sorry, but suffering is not my personal idea of a good leisure time when it comes to fiction. Also, the "Is there a supernatural factor to this or not?" bit of the story is taking forever to get anywhere and I'm starting to feel like I want to get out and push.
