The language that Herbert uses is far richer than the language of most modern books, heavy on descriptive verbs versus verbs of being. Observe:

"A wide patch of dust-blurred stars framed in angular darkness appeared where the door-wall had been. Starlight defined a shelf beyond, a suggestion of sand ripples."

I suppose this is an example of why E-prime is a strong choice, especially for action-oriented stories.

When I started this book, I struggled to get into it because there were so many names and details that I did not understand.

Several months of slogging later...

I am loving DUNE. I understand the little threads now (at least, more than I did) and I'm really loving the characters of Jessica and Paul. Jessica is so poised and trained and secretive--and Paul is her biggest secret. Can't wait to learn more about them!
