I'm enjoying this new adventure of the Igibys. The Hollowsfolk are colorful and the relationship between Janner and Kalmar is deepening and taking a more powerful shape.

With the twist at the end of the last book, this third installment starts out strong. I love Janner's relationship with his brother, who, in this book, is not Tink anymore. He's Kalmar. Known by his king name even though he looks like the enemy. Heartbreaking but so gripping!

Finally! News of Peet the Sock Man! Janner is also maturing into a real hero; the choices he's making are worthy of his position. Go, Janner! Go, Peet!

I didn't expect to be as intrigued by this book as I am. The characters are believable, the theme sobering, and the integration of past and present with multiple realities surprisingly seamless for me.

The escape was awesome! I finally feel that Janner is embracing his heritage and role. It's exciting watching him become less a boy and more a man.

I appreciate the themes in this series, and the occasional plot twists. I admit to being somewhat weary of the number of times they move from trouble to trouble. I've lost count of their encounters with the Fangs. And I miss Pete the Sock Man; hope he returns to the story soon!

With the current popularity of dystopian novels in the market, there was part of me that eye-rolled at the thought of another one. But Black Tiger has been delightful to read so far. I expected the usual "dystopian POV" of present-tense first-person to feel as dry as in other books, but Ms. Baysinger spins language well, eschewing snappy brevity for more lyrical vocabulary. I'm enjoying the word-pictures.

The language that Herbert uses is far richer than the language of most modern books, heavy on descriptive verbs versus verbs of being. Observe:

"A wide patch of dust-blurred stars framed in angular darkness appeared where the door-wall had been. Starlight defined a shelf beyond, a suggestion of sand ripples."

I suppose this is an example of why E-prime is a strong choice, especially for action-oriented stories.

When I started this book, I struggled to get into it because there were so many names and details that I did not understand.

Several months of slogging later...

I am loving DUNE. I understand the little threads now (at least, more than I did) and I'm really loving the characters of Jessica and Paul. Jessica is so poised and trained and secretive--and Paul is her biggest secret. Can't wait to learn more about them!

I've been reading the book over breakfast. It's interesting, but I'm having a hard time getting into it. Maybe it's because I'm still trying to figure out the characters, what makes them tick? I can't care what happens until I know who they are, but the story involves unraveling their lives and pasts bit by bit. The story is definitely chilling in a horror story kind of way.
