Cero helps Aiz escape. An Ankanese ship takes her, and she’s reluctant but Cero insists this is the best way to survive.

Sirsha tries to escape on a boat, her eyes go white while the sea speaks to her, a rare thing. She’s trying to get on a boat to escape, lying she’s a sailor and Quil and she recognizes Sufiyan.

Aiz gets interrogated. There is a seige on the place for Quil. His aunt Hel sends him off with a custom scim, for protection so he can survive to take the throne, despite his reservations.

In the Tohr, Aiz and Mother Div are put into a cell will children. Their parents were snipes and died in the prison. The guards make a show of taking all the clerics for questioning and beating them, then bringing them back. Div tells Aiz to tell her stories, to keep moral up. A week later, Aiz is taken by the guards for questioning.

Sirsha tracks a client’s target, a killer. She recognizes they’re female and headed south, due to her ability.

Quil confronts Aunt Helene about the children getting killed and she admits she needed him in the masks to protect him from that. At the ball that night, Quil discovers not only is Hel putting him on the throne like she said she would, he’s also engaged.

Cero helps her escape with Tiral’s book. She is caught & brought before the Trisrch, who blames her, the clerics & orphans. She is sent to the Tohr for questioning, and the orphans are conscripted. The clerics questioned.

Shirsha is a tracker for a gem dealer who’s a bit corrupt. She’s saving to escape the empire, but her dealer, Migvah, tries to rob her and kill her, but ends up spelling her own death. Shirsha survives only to get offered a job by a mysterious man.

Quil is the prince who serves in the masks. There’s a lot of deaths they are keeping secret. Bani, who is like a goddess, confronts him after ordering him to run in his kind to avoid an assassination attempt that strikes a 13-yo boy. He asks about the deaths, Bani is cryptic.

Aiz was sorted from the burnt-down orphanage to the flight squadron. The boy she slept with, Cero, was too, but he’s in pilot training. Aiz is a snipe, the lowest, a cleaner who handles Loa, the Liquid Metal to fly with, and she’s also a bed servant to Tiral, a nepobaby, whom she tries to kill.
