The line-level writing was not to my taste (to an extreme degree), the plot felt like thinly-veiled self-insert wish fulfillment on the part of the author, and I just couldn't find anything about the book that I liked, in either the contemporary or the SF meta-narrative.
It seems to be well-loved by a lot of people, though, so I might just be missing something.
