With his cursed hand, Alistair leaned forward and kept Gavin’s cheek and Gavin didn’t lean away, not even as the glow of the Demon’s Pyre seeped over him catching in the blond of his eyelashes like that very image of him that had first caught Alistair so off guard.

“You’re wrong,” Alistair said softly, his face hovering over Gavin’s. I will never regret what I’ve done for my family, not even this.”

If Gavin’s memory truly wanted to torment him, then it wouldn’t be this fantasy that he tortured him with—it would be the others, the ones that he’d pondered at night yet spent the morning trying desperately to forget. A phantom touch tracing down his spine. The ghostly press of lips against his wrist, his neck, his mouth.

Alistair had asked him who they’d be, in a different story. He wondered for the first time if they could have one. If they could truly acknowledge what was happening to the tournament. To Hendry. Between each other.

He didn’t know what kind of story that would be, exactly. But he knew it was one worth fighting for.

But he couldn’t resist asking, “In a different story, would we still have been enemies?”

Alistair had never fantasized about killing Gavin before, but he certainly would tonight. He would lie in bed and stare at the ceiling, envisioning a death that Gavin Grieve deemed original enough for him. Because, for reasons Alistair couldn’t explain, when he did kill Gavin, he didn’t care if Gavin died afraid or angry or even sorry. Not so long as he died impressed.

“How do you plan on killing me?” Alistair asked instead.

Gavin fixed Alistair with a steely stare. “What are you talking about?”

“After we’re miraculously cured, after we defeat all the other champions, and our alliance is finished, how do you plan on killing me? I know you think about it.”

“Why would you think that?”

“Because I think about it. Constantly.”
