Just reached the scene of Lincoln visiting his son in the crypt. The competing voices interpreting his grief keep the moment both moving and strangely distanced, preventing easy sentimentality. The polyphony is working for me so far.

The polyphony is really working for me. Willie’s fragile denial, the conflicting accounts of Lincoln’s grief, and the grotesque, self-exposing voices in the Bardo create a striking mix of tenderness and dark comedy. It feels varied rather than repetitive so far.
