This book probably would have been more interesting if it followed the older son once he left, seeing a rebellion from the pov of a mother staying in her house with her kids acting out very slightly isn’t exactly a riveting concept

Seen 2 reviews which captured it 100% - “just another white man trying to be George Orwell and the literary world eating it up” and “the world ends not with a bang but with a whimper”.
Author made an artistic decision to use no grammar or paragraphs and these massive chapters. Was a waste of time. The artsy quotes didn’t hit.

Unlikeable and there was just something missing. You never find out what happens to any of them and Molly is the only one I cared about and she was becoming unreasonable in the end. Very unsatisfying read, grim and I like a bit of hope in a story about pushing back on things like that. So let down and didn’t enjoy the writing style either. 50% maybe?

Nah that’s shite, I didn’t enjoy it at all in the end. Really disappointing as I said before somehow made a revolution story boring. I appreciate that this is reality for people fleeing war torn countries where both sides are corrupted and everyone takes advantage of the people trying to survive, like they’re the real victims in it all. This is so grim and I don’t like Eilish at all, once again treating Molly like shite and then the parents with the sick kid and she’s like sure he’s only a small baby they’ve barely had time to get to know him, hardly a loss??? Well shut up about your fucking baby so

I didn’t think I cared that much about imagery or descriptions until there were none. ‘She wakes up to the sound of war’, alright that’s chill sure.

Ugh her kids are annoying shits and whenever the daughter stands up for the mother, the mother treats her like shit. Typical Irish bollix dynamics with Irish mothers and their shithead sons

I want to love this but so far it’s a bit slow and domestic considering it’s a police state situation, I hope it picks up but bit of a drag so far. Characters are whatever and have gotten used to the way it’s written now but still don’t love it.
