Finished this wonderful book but internet knocked out by a storm here (I'm at library) so reviews will have to hold for a week while we wait for a new ADSL unit to arrive. Fabulous stuff. Can't wait to write about it. I'll mark it as read when I post the review later.

245 out of 287 now, so getting there. I'll be sorry to see it end, such a great read.

Not as close to finishing as the page count appears on this terrific -- and I'm not overstating that -- novel by Ernest Gann. My edition is hardback, Colorgravure (from the spine), a Readers Book Club edition in association with The Companion Book Club, London, and has 287 pages. Just a wonderful read. I'm savoring it, because a novel this good doesn't come along very often. Best fiction I've read in quite some time.

Gann was a terrific writer and never more so is that on display than here. It's dense, colorful, and you really get a sense of the people. This isn't the breezy story of adventure, but the thoughtful, almost cinematic one. It's no wonder this was made into a film starring Clark Gable and Susan Hayward.
