The two main characters (Laia&Elias) & their friends & families. As of right now, they are on opposite sides of an empire & a resistance, but Elias is thinking of defecting. Before he could defect, he was selected to take the trials to possibly become the next emperor. Laia is having a hard time after here grand parents are killed & her brother is arrested. She looks for the resistance to possibly rescue her brother.

Finished the book, it was really good. Thanks for the recommendation. It ended with Laia stopping Elias from being executed and running away with him. They are going to go to Kauf Prison to break Laia's brother out so he isn't tortured to death. Before his execution, he lost the final trial to become emperor. His most hated ally won to become emperor, and his best friend won to become the emperor's right-hand woman.

Laia infiltrated Blackcliff to get information for the resistance, who are going to try to rescue her brother. Elias went through the first two trials to potentially become emperor. Elias' friend Helene was ambushed on the first trial, and Elias had to save her so she didn't die. A little while later, the second trial started, and they are in the middle of it. They are running from spectral enemies.
