I'm tired. This evening I've written reviews for 4 of Bella Madison's books with links showing they were plagiarised. I'm not going to write any more. Can we just safely assume that everything she's claimed as hers is plagiarised fan fiction?

Bitchie It's so sad that people do this to others! Not to mention stupid, because they apparently don't realize that there's a large amount of crossover between slash fic readers/writers and M/M romance readers.

Lisa Henry It's INCREDIBLY stupid, but for some reason it keeps happening! But you're right - it's like they think fanfic exists in a vacuum or something. And these aren't obscure fics with hardly any hits that she's stolen - these are popular fics.

That's what they seem to freaking look for! One of the ones a year or so ago, she plagiarized from some of THE most popular fics in the freaking Twilight fandom, which, like it or hate it, was pretty damned popular there for a while, and it still fairly active.

I guess they don't realize that readers read?

Maybe they tell themselves they are "Rebooting the story", lol! Hey, it works for Hollywood!

Kat This pisses me off so badly. I know that AO3 states that it provides legal assistance for its members. Since this "Bella Madison" went poof it probably doesn't have to come to that, but I hope AO3 can take a stance against this somehow.

Lisa Henry From my understanding the legal assistance AO3 provides is mostly to protect fanfic writers against being sued for copyright infringement - I don't know if they take action if someone's fic is plagiarised. I'd like to see Amazon actually get pro-active and check that their products aren't stolen before offering them for sale. It didn't take any fancy software to detect the plagiarism here, just a three second google search.

Kat Right, that's probably it. Or maybe it just hasn't come up as an issue yet for AO3. Since the fanfic community there didn't really seem to mesh with the one reading published works, it must be very difficult to find out if you've been plagiarized. It's likely easier to throw a few sentences of a published book into Google and see what comes up than vice versa.

I hope that at least Amazon makes sure it isn't profitable to plagiarize. Even if authors are found out and have deleted the plagiarized work, I hope Amazon has the means to pull back the money the author generated from offering plagiarized works as their own, also if readers don't demand a refund.

Lisa Henry AFAIK it takes about 3 months to get your first check from Amazon? So hopefully the books were pulled before any more exchanged hands with the "author".
