“Unhappy people are sensitive to the unhappiness of others. “

Y’all this did nothing for me.This was more philosophical than emotional. There was a lot of assumptions and lack of character depth here which made me wonder if this was meant to be fiction or not.

For instance - the suicide attempt with lover made no sense. Why did she decide to jump with him? What was her story or am I missing something here?🫠

“I wondered, what did he mean by society? The plural of human beings?

From the moment I suspected society might be an individual, I was able to act more in accordance with my own inclinations.”

“I find it difficult to understand the kind of human being who lives, or who is sure he can live - purely, happily, serenely - while engaged in deceit.”

Okay when does this start getting sad? So far this is so philosophical. My brain is activated but my heart is asleep. I bought a box of tissues as y’all advised. When I would I need them? When do I start crying? 🤣

“I’m convinced that human life is filled with many pure happy serene examples of insincerity- truly splendid of the kind - of people deceiving one and another without strangely enough any wounds being inflicted. Of people who seem unaware that they are deceiving one another.

But I have no special interest in instances of mutual deception.”

Ayo Also please don’t come for me but it has to be said - the main character wasn’t likable and had toxic tendencies. Wasn’t he sexist? Or am I missing something? Why on earth is this book being raved about?

It didn’t give sad, it didn’t give poignant, it didn’t give empathy. Some cute philosophical quips and that was it.
