I suspect Austen must've had some terrible experiences with vicars.

Mrs. Elton might be the most potently annoying yet real character I have come across. "Upon my word, hahaha, Maple Grove, hahahaha, Jane Fairfax blablabla"

A character so insipid one wishes the French had landed in Britain if only to interrupt her endless waffling with an artillery barrage on Highbury's vicarage. One hopes Emma marries Mr. Churchill, so that she can escape Mrs. Elton at his Yorkshire estate.

Jane Austen has a particular talent for writing characters so annoying one would not lament them coming to a particularly violent end.
