I find myself shutting this book when I'm done for that day and rubbing my hand across its cover a few times, like soothing a baby. That means I care about the characters.

Each evening I read a "Song," which makes this doorstop of a tome go quickly. Not that I want it to. I feel like the characters are real people, which is a high compliment for a book. I was getting memories of Roots and feeling a bit guilty, like I was comparing the best known novel about slavery to this author's, which seemed diminishing, but then she threw in a reference to Kunte Kinte as if to say, it's OK.

I chose this for Black History Month and I'm very glad I did. I red a Song a day.
