*Spoilers in comments* overall a pretty good thriller, with a couple of plot twists that made the storyline quite engaging. The audiobook narrator had a very heavy Scottish accent, which made it a bit challenging, but overall I like the story and the writing. Plus, the main characters were overall likable. Would recommend.

Lena The story covers deputy inspector Castorphine and his crew of detectives as they’re trying to uncover what happened when the owner of one of the most successful distilleries in the area goes on a hike and has a major heart attack. His sister Patricia ends up, going to the police stating that she believes that he was poisoned and that there are people after the family. After this, Patricia is knocked out in her home and has both of her eyeballs poked out with a paintbrush, and her blood is used to paint over a canvas she had been working on. It’s important to note that the deceased man Jack has two children, one of whom is Rob, which was his son who was attempting to create new products for this distillery, and the other one, a daughter who was diagnosed earlier in her lifetime with a very significant mental illness. He also had a wife named Eva.

Lena One day when Rob and Jack’s old coworkers went on a hike to distribute his ashes in the Scottish Highlands. They are shot at. Brian, who was actually the lover of his mom Eva, was shot to death and his other friend Sandy was also shot. Rob manages to make it back and call for help. At that point they are on the search whoever is targeting the family. It’s also important to note that the daughter with a psych psychiatric illness is also abducted by somebody.

Lena Basically, in summary, what ends up happening is that when she was younger, the daughter with a psychiatric illness accidentally ended up, blinding one of her colleagues at school, allegedly by accident. This girl ended up becoming completely blinded, but Jack was taking care of her to ensure she would always be provided for since the accident. Unfortunately, however, she is targeted by a gang that is selling drugs, and they want her basically to be the person trafficking the drugs. They kept on putting pressure on her, and unfortunately, she ends up, taking her own life by jumping in front of a train because she couldn’t handle the pressure of the gang breathing down her neck. After this happens, her father snaps. He ends up, blaming the family because they were the reason that she became blind in the first place, and her being blind, as what caused her to be targeted by that particular gang.

Lena The father of this girl is the one that blinds Patricia and also kidnapped the daughter with a psych psychiatric illness Phoebe

Lena They basically end up, finding Phoebe and this man and end up, arresting him, and it turns out that he had a psychiatric illness that was brought about or uncovered by the death of his daughter.

The portion of the mystery however that was unsolved was the murder of Jack. They end up discovering happened is that he drank poison that was in his water bottle that he took on the hike. But we end up uncovering, however, is the fact that Eva is the one that provided this poison to her son to make the water, telling him that it was just leaves of rosemary. Eva also instructed their home cleaner to completely clean the location where Rob had made the water for his dad. So the father basically died of poisoning at the hands of his wife because she wanted the 1,000,000 pound life insurance that she had taken on his life prior to him dying.

The end of the book basically was on a happier note that Eva had been arrested, Phoebe was seeking the psychiatric support she needed, and the rest of the family was reunited.

Lena Overall was a very engaging read, and I would recommend. There were some slight eye rolls during parts of the book, but I definitely was engaged and wanted to continue reading and figuring out what happened in the plot line.
