Just finished Chapter 7. Adam is now back at the Salinas Valley after the death of his father, Cyrus. Adam and Charles found out that their father left them fortune. This made them suspect that their father is a dishonest man. Adam went on this monologue about how he does not love his father, but he had faith in him and therefore does not question the fortune they just inherited.

Disturbed, he takes her outside town to punish her, but the violence escalates beyond his control. Cathy survives his brutal punishment.
