Just read Chapter Forty-One. Back in the present, the birds in the trees above Malorie and the children see something in the river (possibly what's been following them) and brutally kill each other. At that moment, they come to the fork in the river and hear a voicemail from Tom playing on a speaker. But the thing finally catches up to the boat. Malorie now has to open her eyes. Uh oh!

Just read Chapter Forty-Three and finished the book. Back in the present, after the creature leaves, Malorie and the children arrive at their destination, which turns out to be a school for the blind. Though Malorie is at first scared, she feels hopeful after learning about their astounding amount of resources and agrees to live there with her two children, who she names Tom and Olympia. Overall, good novel!

Just read Chapter Forty-Three. Back in the past, Malorie and Olympia's labor is disrupted by Gary's return. He's broken the windows and unlocked the doors, allowing creatures to drive the housemates to suicide, except for Malorie and the babies. After Gary leaves, a man named Rick calls to give Malorie directions to a safe haven. Malorie spends the next four years living alone with the children. Holy shit!

Just read Chapter Forty. Two weeks later, Victor starts growling at the cellar door, afraid of something. Tom, Jules, and Malorie go down and confront the unwell Don, who bursts into tears and agrees to go upstairs. But the reunion is cut short when Malorie feels sick and has to be taken upstairs, where she falls asleep. It's time for the moment we've all been scared of. She's going into labor.

Just read Chapter Thirty-Nine. Back in the past, five weeks have passed since Gary was evicted. Don has been spending all his time in the cellar, and Malorie worries that Gary's departure has deeply affected him. Is he digging a tunnel? Is he writing in a notebook? Who knows. Regardless, Don has become a bit of a hermit confined to the cellar. Damn. Is he gonna become our final antagonist? I hope not.

Just read Chapter Thirty-Eight. Back in the present, Malorie worries that Gary is the one following her and the kids, having waited four years to get revenge on her for throwing him out of the house. The Boy is finally able to distinguish the mystery entity's sound. Whatever it is, isn't rowing or swimming, but walking on the water. Afraid, Malorie keeps rowing. Is a Creature following them? Uh oh!

Just read Chapter Thirty-Seven. At dinner, Malorie finally reveals to the housemates that she saw Gary's notebook. Though Gary explains he just wanted to understand how Frank thought, the others grow concerned. The housemates, all but Don, ultimately vote to evict Gary from the house. Gary leaves, and Don storms down to the cellar in rage. So, uh, things won't get any worse from here, will they?

Just read Chapter Thirty-Six. Back in the present, Malorie gets the feeling that someone is following them. She asks the Boy to listen carefully and tell her everything he knows, but he can't identify any of the sounds and starts crying. Malorie keeps rowing, wondering if somebody really is following them. I kinda hope not.

Just read Chapter Thirty-Five. It's been a week since Tom and Jules left, and Malorie is still thinking about Gary's notebook. Fearing that telling individual housemates would result in violence, she decides to tell them altogether. But she is stopped at the last minute when Tom and Jules finally return, having retrieved a phone book. But Gary appears to know Malorie was reading the notebook. Uh oh!

Just read Chapter Thirty-Four. Back in the past, Malorie sneaks to the dining room at night to look inside Gary's briefcase. On looking at the notebook inside, she realizes that Gary was actually the crazy housemate who believed the creatures were harmless. Worried Gary might approach her, she returns the briefcase and goes back upstairs. Looks like we've finally met our villain. Uh oh!

Just read Chapter Thirty-Three. Back in the present, Malorie remembers a blindfolded trip she took with Victor to a bar, back when the kids were babies. They hoped to retrieve microphones and amplifiers to upgrade their alarm system. After several failed attempts, they got there and retrieved the objects, but Victor saw something in the cellar, went mad, and violently mutilated himself to death. Holy shit!
