Chapter 2: 1 Corinthians 11:1-16 – Verse by Verse

A long but important chapter. Lipsy promises to come back to all the controversies in later chapters, so we'll wait for them there.

His explanation for the potentially confusing "because of the angels" (v.10) is as insightful as it is brief: "Willing subordination to authority is what distinguishes angels from devils."

Last non-summary chapter in summary:

Repurposing Paul's argument in 1 Corinthians 8, Lipsy argues that even if a woman disagrees that she needs to wear a headcovering, as long as she isn't violating her conscience, she should still lovingly choose to do so anyway for the sake of not offending others around her who might believe that she ought to be doing so.

Where we agree:
1.The headcovering verses are grounded in creation and thus matter today. They were not culturally limited.
2.The gifts have ceased (we disagree as to why).
3.Women are to demonstrate submission to male authority.

Where we disagree:
1."Prays" here means speaking in tongues (I hold this, he curtly dismisses the idea).
2.These verses are limited to the corporate church setting (I believe they are).
