Going to put this in my full review:

It is true that self-centeredness is a pillar of why marriage dissolves. Nevertheless, I wish this book would elaborate on this in a more systemic context. I understand it’s a biblical, theological forward book, but the potency of impact could be so much stronger if this book just asked and answered: why are men and women driven to more self-centered mentalities and behaviors?

okay this is where the book loses me because, while being a wife does require time and commitment, it shouldn't compromise freedom? Maybe they could argue "time and commitment into the marriage" is sacrificing freedom, but a healthy marriage allows a wife to be her own person and not just the shadow of her husband and the one doing all the invisible labor in the marriage...but you know, that's traditional marriage

because someone not wanting marriage with you being indicative of them lacking a desire for commitment, monogamy, devotion, and all-encompassing love for another person is…correct

I was going to roll my eyes so fast when he referenced the “wives must submit to their husbands” Bible verse but then he said the second part…then he makes the case that women have the right to be a little less submissive ? 👀 you know what—I’ll give him that

the book says men prioritize compatibility over sexual attraction (something women supposedly pedestalize after asking literally only ONE woman (??)), but the survey they substantiate this argument with detail that the men confirmed it was “the willingness to accept them as they are and not change them”

so they collectively want to do nothing to be better versions of themselves and the wives have to deal with it

not-so-friendly reminder that if the woman were to gain weight in the relationship, nobody would bat an eye if the man wasn’t physically attracted to her anymore 🫩

I’m going to try and be open-minded with this one but I keep hearing all the ways marriage benefits men and not enough about women…and yes, when Keller says “married people” I assume he’s mainly talking about men given how gender bias in data collection works here
