I was thinking about the regent's guard dressed in red and Laurent's in blue, and that this reminds me of Cardinal's Red guard and King's Musketeers in blue. And since Vere is inspired by French - I don't know which era exactly - I wonder if it's deliberate or just coincidence.

can i ask something? i remember seeing someone mention a few years ago that this book has underlying themes of racism...is that true?

this series has been accused of everything under the sun usually by people who cant distinguish between a book having the themes of X and Y vs a book portraying those themes in a positive light.

I see that Nel already gave a good answer. This series is notorious for being extremly problematic but I think every book can be problematic from a certain point of view. And at the end of the day it's a series about fictional charachters from fictional kingdoms, and I think it's not supposed to be that deep. But that's just my opinion. If you'll give it a try, I hope you're gonna like it 😊 And if not, there are other books to enjoy 😊😊
