+ full of peculiar ideas, e.g. blend between animate/inanimate, people turning into objects and objects having intent. a dentist seeing the soul in the teeth. soldiers feeling like stone masons while killing Hereros (fucked up thought).
- too many characters with little to differentiate them, and at points it drags on.
clearly an original thinker, looking forward to his later and better crafted books

The narrative and ideas clearly trace a core, while never exposing it. Like water flowing around a stone, curving around its surface. The pacing feels like a physical force, sometimes gliding smooth, sometimes turning so violently, it gives your attention a whiplash.
