Well done in most respects. Being a fan of Percival Everett, the author's version of Oliver Twist, the Dickens classic pales in comparison to James, though she points out in the Afterward that it was Dickens who used antisemitic themes in the original. Regardless a brief 4 star review tomorrow

At its core the story displays the dichotomy of being human. Fagin a teacher who cares and Sikes a student who lacks gratitude. Well written and paced it's worth adding

Well done. Unlike the reimaguned story Percival Everett does in James, it's the sort that has wide appeal. Fagin is a likeable character with compassion and humanity which is a contradiction in terms for a thief!

Curious.. While I don't remember the original story, noticing use of antisemitism in the 1800s came as a surprise. It's an interesting narrative that continues to evolve

Easy to see why this is so popular. Paced well, the narrative mimics the original I'm told but differs since it's focused on Fagin and Sikes who bond while doing their best to thrive while honing the art of picking pockets.
