I believe it is generally wrong to criticize authors as minor, e.g., Shirley Ann Grau was a 1965 Pulitzer Prize winner.

I found The Trial of Mr. M by Louis Auchincloss enigmatic in its treatment of racism in the 1950s. The narrative is representative of the racist attitudes of the 50's, but I'm unclear about what point Auchencloss is trying to make.
