Kinda interesting reading this from a modern perspective, because while by 18th century standards, Hippolita's behaviour made her virtuous, all I see is her upholding patriarchal systems to the detriment of herself and both her daughter and Isabella. She's encouraging them to accept marriages that she knows will make them miserable, and in Isabella's case with a man who's spent the book tormenting her. Girl stand UP
