Not just Shanghainese American but 1. A novel that draws heavily from the author’s and/or their mother’s/grandmother’s experiences respectively and 2. A novel that also deals with the time period before (and in this case during) the Cultural Revolution, during more or less my grandparents’ timeline (Gish’s mother was around the same age às my grandparents)
