I'm reading the introduction as I go. Chapmans intro is a summary book by book, Wilson seems more thematic section. The "ten tongues " section in her intro speaks about the catalogue of ships being a way of defining the scope of the war, how world-wide it was.

I never read the intro until I finish the book because of spoilers but having read the Iliad it is Ok. At SFU they taught that sharing the names of so many people in the catalog of ships provided a means of identification with the audience. Like I know that family name! It enabled the audience to be a part of the story. I will look at other theories.
