Holy hell Mary! I forgot this is a horror novel not a thriller. I assume the town makes her crazy and it’s something to do with the religion. Maybe either she’s possessed or a demon or cult kills these people for sacrificing and blames her? Hell if I know I’m so lost but it’s something cult related. Eleanor’s “too young to do something” is definitely a smoking gun. Ritual maybe?killing?

God I love ghosts. Also, a middle aged protagonist is so refreshing. I feel the answer to the mystery is one of three things:
1. Mary really is a victim reincarnated. Probably the Sheriff since it seems she was born when he died.
2. Mary is crazy. She killed the dog, and the new victim. 3. Cult
It could be a mix of all 3. Also, maybe the gardener is the ghost of the mayor or the killer?
