Took a break because this book is so baffling. It has all the makings of a good story, but the style of writing is very unusual

Guys I don’t think the assassination is going to work. We aren’t even halfway through the book

The couterie system is an interesting way for Farrow to get into the palace. This book does have good ideas, it just has the most baffling choices in the prose and pacing
I also liked the line “take away the pomp and circumstance(…) and he’s just another boy, one that you never got to choose for yourself.”
It’s nice how they didn’t demonize Lavendra for basically being groomed into that relationship too

Okay another tangent about that because seriously. So many fantasy stories treat violent misogyny as simply a fact of life that can never be challenged. Or if it is challenged, it’s never been challenged by anyone before the main character. And in your worst case, she STILL needs a strong man to help her.
As if our own history here on earth isn’t full of women who stood up for themselves no matter what

Oh they can be gay! Good for them!
This book’s strongest suit is still that it’s set in a universe with reverse sexism, so we can be reminded of how many fantasy stories are just so damn sexist to the girls for no particular reason
(Side vent: they always claim it’s for “period accuracy” but then aren’t set in any discernible period/place outside of “vaguely European, the past”

Ignore everything I’ve said so far.
This is world for word several pages form the first chapter, recounted with (as far as I can tell) zero changes.
What the hell

Okay, only thirty pages in and I have Questions
-does magic have an actual limit beyond its users level of practice/talent?
-what separates humans from ententes besides having powers?
-how are ententes born?
-Is our main character an actual seven year old?
-why does this start with someone burning to death and then become a school story? When do we catch up to the plot?

(I have been negative, but this book isn’t bad, I’m just salty by default)
