I like this so far, actually, but the characterization of 6/Sybil is weird to me. The reader is told that she was the best diviner, the abbesses favorite, truly believed in all the stuff, which to me would imply a more “goody two shoes/teachers per” type of character, but we don’t really see her acting like that throughout this first chunk of the book here.

I think one my issues with some fantasy, or specificity this author, as a primarily historical fiction reader is that I’m not given enough details on the culture and the customs of these worlds to make them feel real. Any civilization with a government and a ruling class, from the courts of Europe to the Kuge in Japan have extensive cultural rules and practices, and when you write a fantasy world that doesn’t-

weird to me that the diviners are allowed to have sex with visitors. This might be my historical fiction brain ruining this, I think of them as nuns or vestal virgins, who famously could face dire consequences for having sex, but this is a fantasy novel so yes it’s different- but if the point is that the abbess is controlling them, would it not make sense for the diviners to have not be allowed that freedom?
