The unreliability is becoming clearer and clearer. Stevens can’t be honest with us nor himself. And it is sad. He has his achievements that he is proud is that are clearly sullied by history. He claims to deny where he worked, but gives half baked reasons one can see straight through. Claims that greatness is defined by quality work for a proper end. But, he can’t bear to consider what if it is all nullified.

Absolutely emotionally crushing, as expected. Some clear themes emerging (light vs dark, windows looking towards nature, professional vs amateur, and clear example of fallibility of memory and recollection)

This books is a masterpiece. Such subtle character writing, and small suggestions of unreliability popping up here and there. Also, the idea of someone with such a rigid system for his world and having such a distinct foil that undermines it (ms Kenton) is so well paced and written. Can already recommend this to everyone (we’ll see if that stays consistent)

Stevens feels so relatable. To me at least. Very analytical, but also never sure of when his analysis or decisions are enough. Very precise in a way where he recognizes problems where other people don’t (and it gnaws away at him despite others not really caring). Hates ambiguity, and mourns the loss of a more structured and ordered system he understood. Amazing characterization so far. Beauty if city v countryside
