For all of the erotic scenes, watching Betty come into her sexuality, finding she’s aroused by voyeurism (my girl wanted a little porn!), the personal and familial changes, and falling in love with Ava, this is actually a very emotional book. I feel wrung the fuck out. 5 stars.

I think I'm going to rate this 5 stars. I don't think a book has immersed me in a person's emotions (even when I hated it) as much as this book in this year. This is probably some of the best writing I've read this year and while Veracity of Lies is still my favorite Woiwood book, this is definitely a close second.

It has to be miserable to always be caught up in this push pull dynamic brought about by Ava’s work. How long was this supposed to go on before the novelty of arousal wears thin against the misery of dating a sex worker?

Ava’s practicality and brashness didn’t rub well against Betty’s naïveté. Betty’s concerns are valid but so is Ava’s behavior. The whole situation seems doomed because there’s no good way out. And it doesn’t seem like Betty will be able to manage the nuances of this relationship long term.

This book would benefit from adaptation. You can see / smell/ feel the book. Same with Veracity of Lies.

I’m not sure I particularly care for the character of Betty. But it’s interesting reading the minding of a 50 year old woman in her 50s discover her sexuality and affinity for women. Even more so in this deeply sexual way, coming from a woman who has only been with one man and now is about to be with one woman. Interesting.

Again. Woiwood doing the damn thing. I’m hooked.

The dreariness of this woman’s life is depressing. Can’t wait for when she meets the other woman. Some literal excitement. 1950s housewife core isn’t my forte please. Abeg.
