it doesn’t matter how many times I read it, the funniest bit of polar exploration to me is john rae going back to london with his earth shattering cannibalism news and relics, but the relics in question are franklin's plate and crozier's spoon and a fork. just missing the fitzjames cannibalism cookbook

I think there is a point to be made about how rae approaches the pelly banks cannibalism with sympathy understanding and criticism only for the guy that left them to get that desperate, and his approach to the franklin expedition cannibalism .. like yeah of course he’d come at it like this is an understandable tragedy instead of with the victorian public’s sense of repulsion

I think about dr john rae in the autumn of 1854 the same way christians think about christ on the cross

john rae detailing and sympathising with a man who resorted to cannibalism two chapters before setting off on his expedition where cannibalism-related-chats are going to put him in lifelong beef with charles dickens is a level of foreshadowing you don’t see outside of english lit class

the fact that the time travel romance book with a polar explorer was about graham gore and not john rae is a crime
