The thing that might look slow is the pace of the story - but owing to how real life pans out - I think the story is completely on track - though it feels slow at times to divulge things. But are the accounts of what is true - whether it is what Josie says or what Walter divulges - become hard to discern. For one thing Josie from the start seems like she is indeed telling the truth and relaying her story truthfully.

Did Josie become a narcissist because of being raised by a narcissist? Is it something innate or has it to do with the environment one's raised in - also as for Booke I guess she suffered since Josie blamed her for losing Roxy, it seems.

What you see are clearly two pathways : One is Josie's and one is Alix's. Now if somebody says that people have control over their destiny - these pathways give us a glimpse of it - getting married at 22 - I think that's more god's work than our human brain thinking and pondering on a decision day in and out - also for most people much of what they can grasp is written on paper - signed by where they are born.
