I understand the importance of this book as one of the first "hardboiled" crime novels but it's just so on the nose that it reads like a satire of a hardboiled crime novel!!!

I know Sam Spade is supposed to be this hardboiled detective but him giving the guy his gun back and being surprised that the guy once again points it at him with the intent to shoot is giving Dr. Doofenshmirtz versus Perry the Platypus
