are we meant to think that jack mort is wearing women's underwear or that roland doesn't know what briefs are? the things SK has decided roland does or doesn't know about seem randomly chosen.

hilarious that the cop literally dies while freaking out that roland-in-jack-mort had the same mannerisms as the terminator.

ALSO lots to be said about those of SK's heroes who fall into love at first sight and how that is always a sign of virtue and heroism, but for the characters who fall into lust at first sight it's almost always a sign of corruption, or the threat of it.

there's also something interesting in how SK chooses who talks about sex and how, not just in DT but all his books. part of it is that he's not good at writing sex and i think he knows it, so he uses horniness-- the succubus who attacks jake, detta's sexual appetites and filthy mouth-- to indicate wrongness or evil. HAVING sex doesn't mean you're bad, but how you TALK about it might.

there's a LOT to say picking apart the way roland and eddie talk about detta vs odetta. SK is doing his best but his limitations as a white cis-male boomer do show through. detta is just hard to take seriously, i guess? and so the way they talk about her as evil and monstrous feels icky. and then odetta as the opposite pure good, also weird.

sweet jesus king is so good at these urgent scenes where every fumble is excruciating, every second is a horrible torment.

in the dark tower drinking game that doesn't exist, you'd take a shot anytime roland mis-hears a word from our world, and i'd be taking my first shot now for tooter fish lolol

Ashley Me too! Especially since it's called The Drawing of the Three lol. But I guess the third is actually Detta.

yeah, i think so, it's just so convoluted bc jack mort has a door, but he's not the one roland is meant to draw through it, it's like why IS that door there, what was meant to be the point of sending roland through it, to watch jake die again? idek. i'm glad SK stopped doing drugs before finishing the series, lmao.

Ashley I would absolutely love him to do a second edited version of books 2-7, just like he did with 1. (And The Stand!) I think it would be super neat.

god i WISH he would do the stand. i want to love that book so much but it just feels so bloated in places. i was already a full-bore constant reader by the time i picked it up back in like 04 i think? and i barely made it through!

Becky Have you tried the 1978 edition of The Stand? It is quite a bit less bloated.

i'm not sure, tbh-- i should check!

Ashley Yeah, he already did The Stand, except he added stuff as much as changed or deleted. I haven't read the original version; it takes place 20 years earlier than the one most people have read, also. His publishers made him cut hundreds of pages, back before he was STEPHEN KING. The uncut version adds them all back. But he has a history of rewriting his work so I need this for TDT.
