Bell and Wendell return to the scene to reassess with the DEA agent McIntyre. Chigurh tracks Moss to the second (third technically) hotel he has holed up in and flushes him out, Moss narrowly escaping a brutal firefight and crossing the Mexican border and pleading for help from and old man in a park.

Chigurh eats cashews and leaves the proprietor’s fate up to the toss of a coin. Then he goes out to the barrial to examine the scene Llewelyn was involved in the day before. Llewelyn and Carla Jean part ways at the bus station at Fort Stockton.

Bell and Wendell are called out to the scene of a man’s body with a hole in the forehead dumped in the trunk of a police cruiser. When Torbert arrives at Sonora, the station is surrounded by yellow tape and is in something of an uproar. Moss makes it back home in the middle of the night and tells Carla Jean he is sending her to Odessa by bus early the next morning and to pack what she wants.

Moss returns to the scene in the middle of the night, guilty for abandoning the man asking for water. His truck is stolen, and he is pursued by unknown enemies who end up shooting his arm after he crosses the river. He begins his trek to Langtry on foot beaten and battered.

Moss, while out hunting, stumbles upon the site of a drug deal gone wrong. There is one man alive at the scene, barely clinging to life and asking for water. He trails the blood-soaked chaparral to the would-be last man standing, who has now also died while guarding a briefcase containing millions of dollars in cash. He takes the case home along with numerous weapons, telling his wife he was buying cigarettes.

After a haunting introduction from Ed Tom Bell, Shigur escapes from Deputy custody by strangling him with his handcuffs, steals his car, then pulls a man in a Ford over and dispatches him with his pneumatic execution device.
