A brutal start. A powerful, relentless, unflinching opening about a woman enduring 14 years of beatings and abuse from her cop husband, including hitting her hard enough to make her miscarry at four months. It’s hard to bear, but that is the point, I loved the moment when Rose finally allowed hersefl to wake up to her situation and run.

This is a powerful piece of writing, so powerful that I can only read it in small snippets, which means it’s going to take me forever to finish this, but I suspect it’s going to be worth the time.

Take the woo woo stuff with the picture out, remove King’s name and I think this would have been read as an unusally empathic story about an abused woman rebuilding her life, especially in the 1990s.
Rose reads from ‘Dark Passage’ by David Geddis. I didn’t know the book or the author, but, I’ve having checked a few samples, I know that, not for the first time, I have a new author to explore thanks to Stephen King.

The text is brilliant- the parts with Rose are empathetic without being sentimetal - the parts with her husband are toxic but credible. The narrators are getting the tone right. The only thing bugging me is the music the publisher has added to the audiobook. It’s cliechéd, intrusive and superflous.
