What else did I ever do, in fact, but endlessly dig? The house, the papers from the archive, my ancestors’ paintings and other objects, the Chronica Cimamontium, Vallorgàna, the Mountain: anything, as long as it could be excavated; anything, as long as retracing it backwards might let me glimpse the faraway regions whence I and the world which I inhabit had likely come.
