Must put book down and go to bed. But first, I have to say what everyone is probably thinking at this point of the book: my absolute last choice for a book series to get portaled into is Game of Thrones world, with Name of the Wind world and First Law world being tied for second place. Nope, nope, nope. (Kair Toren is not clearly derivative, but it has some tonal similarities to those worlds.)

Kate McMurry I have never read GOT or watched the TV series because the author is notorious for killing off main characters. So I can't compare. But the authors have said in their blog that if you can make it through that free first few chapters offered by the publisher, which I've read, the rest of it isn't that violent and dark. Which is a relief to me as a more wimpy type reader.

Katyana I actually started GoT when it first released, way back as a teenager. I loved it, but have long-since lost hope GRRM will ever finish it. In any case, it is by far the fantasy book series I would least want to be dropped into, though Abercrombie's First Law series would also be no picnic.

Katyana I've become a wimpier reader as the world gets darker, or maybe just as I've gotten older. I think I look for escapism more than anything in my books now. But so far (I'm just past the halfway mark), yes, the grimmest was the opening. But the world of this book series feels like it is in the vein of those super grim epic fantasy series, and Maggie is desperate to change it and save her favorite characters. I love it so far.

Kate McMurry I've heard a lot of different opinions about GRRM from various people who like the show. But nobody that's actually read his work. I wonder if you would still like it now years later if you read it again? Some things I read in my teens I definitely do still like but others kind of bore me.

Katyana I would. I've re-read it recently. The show fell apart when it left the books behind, and now it's a mess, but the books are spectacular epic fantasy, and like JRR Tolkien I reread them semi regularly, even if I don't honestly think he'll finish them.

Kate McMurry That's a real problem with TV versions of books in any portion of the fantasy genre. Ugh.

Katyana Yeah, absolutely
