Every interview Pullman did involved "This trilogy is much darker in tone than the previous one." and I keep waiting for it to happen. Like book 1: jolly old adventure, book 2: Lyra is depressed and pharmaceutical companies are funding armed unrest in the middle east. Book 1 of the previous trilogy ended with the brutal murder of a child.

Really hope Pullman has some point to make about the interference of the west causing the turmoil & decreptitude of this (turkish?) city. Instead of "the middle east is Just Like That down with totalitarian religious orders!". anyway.

Ok so the age gap & one sidedness of Mal's affections for Lyra is. I'm trusting Philip on this one. But now we have a creepy uncle, and I know that Philip loves his narrative parallels and I am So Scared 😬

Miscommunication done right! All their problems stem from that Lyra & Pan inevitably start arguing if they talk to each other, and so (inevitably!) they start willfully withholding information from each other.
