I hadn't realized, when I read the reviews and then watched the (truly excellent film, perhaps Gibson's best past Apocalypto, Ransom, and The passion of the Christ, but then I am a history nerd and a lover of words, so ...) that this was written by Simon Winchester.
He is one of my favourite authors. I was only aware of his geological and geographic historical work.

Apparently Simon Winchester retitled it from his original title, The Surgeon of Crowthorne. A wise move.
The film focused far more on the collaboration than the murder or trial, though those were fascinating in their own right.
