Forgot how crazy good the start to this novel is. You go from the cliff hanger of Golden Compass to an entirely new character, but Will is already in such present danger that the reader is immediately on his side. Sets up his character & circumstances and Then resolves the cliffhanger, all within the first chapter. Truly the standard for the middle book of a trilogy.

The changes made to how cloud pines work in the show were very cool, but it came at the cost of narrative tension. What is separate can be lost. Also, the parallel between the seed pods & the mulefa and the cloud pines & the witches
