McTeague, after leaving the mines, finds himself in Keeler. He meets a guy who goes with him to find gold. They do strike gold but McTeague, scared of the police, would run off into Death Valley. Eventually after a couple of days Marcus found him. He had been trailing him. All of their water was gone after the mule was shot by Marcus. McTeague would kill Marcus, but not before handcuffing their wrists together.

As their lives get worse, McTeague becomes more abusive and extorts money from Trina. He has enough one day and steals her money, as she tries and recovers, Trina deposits all of her winnings. Doing it satisfies her greed. McTeague returns and after being turned away by Trina would come back a couple days later and kill her. He returned to the mines, and from there walked through the mountains.

Maria and Zerkow end up dead after marriage and having a baby, which caused Maria to forget about the gold. This drives Zerkow insane. McTeague looses his job bc he didn’t go to college, and becomes abusive towards Trina. She still keeps her money away from him and becomes infatuated with it. Marcus and the rest of her family moved away to diffrent places. McTeague and Marcus fought and McTeague broke Marcus arm.

Marcus gets so mad with himself he stops talking to McTeague. So when they see each other again they get in an argument and ends with him throwing a knife at his best friend. McTeague now mad tried to fight him, only leading him to find a big gold tooth as a present. Trina and McTeague get married and now live together. They are disappointed that it was so simple. The Sieppe’s start their way to south cali.

The party has finished. Old Grannis and Miss Baker go back to enjoying each others life and listening. Maria steals more gold and sells it. Marcus is having huge regrets for allowing McTeague to go for Trina.

Trina, McTeague, Mrs Suellen, and Owgooste go to the theatre and enjoy it. Although they leave early, and Owgooste is on a sugar rush, they find out that Trina won the lottery. Everyone, and an agent, in Mcteague’s building that we know throws a dinner party. Old Grannis meets Miss Baker for the first time, and they don’t speak to each other. It is announced that McTeague will marry Trina soon.

McTeague and Marcus walk together on Sunday afternoon. Eventually they drink beers together. Then McTeague tells Marcus what happened after being questioned about his behaviour. Marcus thinks, and gives McTeague a chance with Tina; furthermore inviting him to Washington’s Birthday. As they leave, they keep a dog named Alexander, who gets in a fight with another dog later that night.

Maria goes throughout the apartment looking for junk. She takes a yellow broken pitcher from Old Grannis, and a pair of shoes from Ms Baker. Then she goes into McTeauges work and steals gold, while he is in distraught about Tina. She goes to Zerkow a greedy polish jew, who does anything to get gold. She lies to him about her past saying that she used to be rich and live with gold worth a million dollars.

Maria is the maid of the complex where McTeague works. Mac drops off Trina, who doesn’t want her teeth to be to damaged, comes back 3 times a week. McTeague falls in love with her; however while she’s asleep from anesthesia, he kisses her. When she awakes he asks her to marry him. She says no no, and throws up the chapter ends with her drinking an anti epilepsy mixture.

First chapter describes the city of San Francisco, introduces us to McTeague, and as well as Marcus. Trina, Marcus’s cousin, lost a tooth and is being sent to McTeague the next day. Both of the men are not very smart and Marcus tries to talk politics with McTeague.
